Excel 2010

I have created 2 connections to 2 excel spreadsheets on a shared drive that contain the data I need to reference. I created the links using connections button in the data tab and then I have created 2 tables in 2 seperate sheets using the get external data, exsiting connections button.

My trouble is that when I come to update the 2 reference spreadsheets they are locked by a user which is my other spredsheet that is doing the referencing.

How can I get excel to only use the connection at the referesh period defined in the connections - properties window? Or is it not that simple?

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
