Lookup ...... I think?!?

Heloo all

i need a quick solution to a very anoying problem......
i have i long sheet full of details as follows:
a1 = name
b1 = department
c1 = school qualifications
d1 = diplomas
e1 = certificates
f1 = further........ and so on....

with about 800 people in this sheet at any one time i don't have the
patients to sit and search how many times applicat X has studied accounting.

now my question..... is there a function... ( not vb code )
that i could put into g1 that will search that row for the word accounting and return the number of times it occurs there?

any and all help appreciated greatly.

look at COUNTIF

Perhaps this:

=COUNTIF(G2:G800,"*accounting*")

Change G2:G800 to the range you want to search.

If you literally just want to search for the word "Accounting" then COUNTIF should do what you want, e.g.: =COUNTIF("A2:A100","*accounting*")

ok so countif will do that but what do i add to the function to get it to return the number of times it appears in that row?
