Possible to control how Excel displays or arranges workbooks on opening?

I'm using Excel 2013 and Windows 8.1.

When I open a workbook, Excel resizes the one I'm opening to match the size of the most recently used open workbook and cascades the workbooks, with the newly-opened workbook the last one in the cascade (in the bottom right). As I open additional workbooks, they get cascaded in the same way.

This even happens even when starting a new Excel session. If I close all windows and shut down Excel and then open a workbook, that workbook doesn't open the way it was previously saved - it opens in the size and position of the most recently closed file. And then additional workbooks, when opened, get resized and cascaded as described above.

Is there a way to stop this? Instead of resizing and cascading, is there a way to make Excel open a workbook in the same size and position it was in when last closed, regardless of other open workbooks?

Thank you.

I answered my own question. If the active workbook is maximized, other workbooks open the same way, and the cascading problem doesn't happen. Problem solved. (I would have just deleted this post but I didn't see how to do that.)
