Is it possible to create a spreadsheet where all cells except a few are locked for editing?

I need to create a template spreadsheet for a client. This client has been rather keen to overtype formula in the past and has caused themselves problems in doing so.

A spreadsheet template where only certain cells are open for editing would be very useful. Is it possible?

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
Sure, just select the cells that you want editable and goto Format-->Cells-->Protection-->Uncheck "Locked" then protect the sheet.

excellent - thank you!

and will the locked formatting continue if i copy and paste the selection of cells many times within a worksheet?

could the user also unlock these cells if they so wanted? is there anyway to password protect them or make them unusable?

Not sure what you mean about the formatting part, but you can add a password when you protect a sheet. That'll keep 99% of users honest.
