starting excel

Before refromatting my harddisk, I backed-up/saved my Excel files.
Trying to recover/open them results in getting a message:

"Name file".xls:file format is not valid

Could it be that I have certain older files made with Windows 95/98 and that my present files are of a newer Excel version???
I have switching files from one computer to another quite a bit.

Anyhow, how do I restore the files?????

Looks like it's something with the registry:

This behavior may occur if registry entries for earlier or later versions of Excel conflict with registry entries for the version of Excel that you are currently running. This condition exists because an earlier or later version of Excel was previously installed on your computer.
