Updating records in linked Sharepoint table

Bit of a long-shot on here, granted, but I wonder whether anyone could give me some generic advice. I have a sharepoint list with about 50k records (I know this has busted the recommended capacity by a considerable degree!), and I have linked this list in MS Access 2003. Now, this list has something in the region of 1,000 concurrent users. It is therefore impossible to perform batch updates, because if just one of the records is locked out by a change from another user, then the whole batch fails. I therefore load the data into a DAO recordset and skip through like rs.moveNext > rs.Edit > rs!Field=1 > rs.Update. etc. etc. Now, for 50k records, through a horrendous CITRIX connection, this is due to take over 20 hours to complete. Can anyone help bring this down? Would ADO be quicker? Anyway round batch-update/record lock problem? Am I missing something? Thanks. ps. sorry about the lack of paragraphs, due to the aforementioned CITRIX environment, my enter key doesn't work!
