Greetings I'm not having any luck getting the range in the filter function variable

Filter:
Selection.AutoFilter
ActiveSheet.Range("$A$1:$E$5000").AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="XXX"

Variable range that I am familiar with:
lastrow = Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
Range("A1:E" & lastrow).Select

I would like to replace
"$A$1:$E$5000" with variable range from above

Advise please

Code:
Sub filter()

lastrow = Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row
ActiveSheet.Range("A1:E" & lastrow).AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="XXX"

End Sub
