What does &syYes mean? Using the COUNTIF function.

I’m editing an excel file which uses the COUNTIF function. I understand the syntax of COUNTIF ie, =COUNTIF(range, criteria) but I don’t understand a statement someone has used for the criteria which is “=”&syYes somewhere else they’ve used “=”&syNo<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
For example a cell might have <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
=COUNTIF(D12:AY12,”=”&syYes)+COUNTIF(D12:AY12,”=”&syNo)<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
If anyone's able to shed some light it’d be very much appreciated

Excel Facts

Square and cube roots
The =SQRT(25) is a square root. For a cube root, use =125^(1/3). For a fourth root, use =625^(1/4).

I'm guessing syYes is a named range

click Insert - Name - Define
See if it's listed there, it should show you what cell it refers to.

Yep that's the one, a colleague just had a look and pointed it out - another confusion came when it turned out the named range was just a cell with 'ü' in it, but apparently this is excel language for a tick.

Thanks for responding!
