I am using the following formula in a cell and when I input Y into C3 I am getting #Name ? instead of "this is broken"

What am I doing wrong?

=IF(C3=Y,"This is broken", "")

If I change the formula to: =IF(C3=15,"This is broken", "") and put 15 in C3, the cell with the formula reads correctly as "this is broken"

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.
Re: I Keep getting an error for a simple syntax. Please help

Try wrapping the Y in ""

Hi Adam,

The Y has to be in quotes like this "Y" or else Excel thinks it's a function which as there is no Y function it returns #Name?.

Happy to help :)

All text in a formula needs to be wrapped inside ""
