Kpi dashboard

Was just assigned a project at work to create a new executive financial dashboard. I know the forum is focused around specific questions. My question is does anyone know of free resources that could help me get started? I tried searching the web but all I see are companies selling their templates/software. I am fairy decent in excel and this can't be that hard to create from scratch. Would just like some resource or templates that head me in the right direction.
