How come I cannot use the autofilters on a protected worksheet?

For some reason when I have put protection on a worksheet, I cannot use my auto-filters. The cells that the auto-filter drop down menus appear in are not locked. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, this is the way Excel 2000 is set up (and perhaps all other older versions of Excel). I've been struggling with this issue myself and searching for a way around it, but haven't found any good alternatives. I've found that XL2002 works around this by allowing users to change filter criteria on an existing auto-filter, but the user cannot create or remove the auto-filter. It must exist before the sheet is protected. This is information from Microsoft support site. Unfortunately, my company doesn't use XL2002, so I'm stuck.
