numbers won't sum

Posted by Randal Byrd on October 28, 2001 9:13 AM

I have a column of numbers that I'm trying to sum. No matter what I do, it sums to zero. I've tried formatting the cells to general numbers, numbers with decimal places, etc...and nothing I do changes the results. Still reads all the values as zero and gives a zero sum? HELP!

Thanks,
Randal in Houston

Are you sure they are numbers and not text? Try this to find out (assumes column A is what you want to sum).

In B1 enter =value(A1) and copy it down to the other rows. After that sum column B & see what happens.

Activate an empty cell, activate Edit|Copy, activate Edit|Paste Special and select Add. Now the SUM formula should work.

check tools/options/calculations - calculation should be set to automatic not manual

I found an answer later in this board - - - I clicked on the column and then chose, DATA - Text to Columns - Finish

That took care of it. Thanks to all who offered help.
