Sorting data which has blank cells

How do I sort data which has blank cells in between?
When I use "sort" it arranges the data one after another
which I don't want. I still want excel to retain the blank cells
after sorting.
Any thoughts?

Whenever I am faced with this type of situation, I add an additional column of data and fill it with a series of numbers beginning at 1 and ending at the last record number. That way I can always re-sort the data back to its original order by sorting on that column.
