Removing preceeding zero's in excel

Hi
can anyone tell me how to remove preceeding zero's in excel I thought I could do this with a value function but I keep getting an error message has anyone any ideas

I just tried this:
=VALUE(A1) (A1 Had 00001254801 in it!)
on A1 formatted as Text and it returned:
1254801
What does the error say?

how about multiplying the cell by one? (=a1*1) It usually works for me. If I need to keep it as text, I use: =clean(a1*1)
