text to numeric format

I am having trouble converting a column of (text)numbers to numeric format. This is a table, copied from an HTML page and pasted into excel.
The column looks like this: (example)

$754.23
$1,553.29
$82.87
$856.34

I've tried re-formatting the column to no success. I need to do calculations with these numbers, but I cannot do them now.
Any ideas?

Have you tried the Value function ?

=VALUE(A1)

If your data beggins in A1, and copy down as needed.

type 1 in an empty cell, copy this cell, select the range of interest, activate Edit|Paste Special, and choose Multiply in the Paste Special window. Delete the cell containing 1. Select the range which is now of numeric type and format it as currency if you so desire.
