Copy, type a bit, but then can't paste

I'm a 1-2-3 person who's been saddled with learning Excel. I'm finding it seriously irritating that I cannot "copy" something, "paste" it, do some more keying and not paste what I've copied again somewhere else. Is there an easy way around this?

Also, why can't I "cut" and then do multiple "pastes", like I can in Lotus applications? When I'm moving a ragne of data quite a distance across a spreadsheet, I don't like having to go back and delete it. (Or am I just missing a trick here?)

This option doesn't appear to exist in 97 (no "Clipboard" option under View -> Toolbars). Any other suggestions?

In Excel 2000 (not sure if it works in 97)
Goto View -> Toolbars and Check Clipboard.

Now you can copy something, do other things, and click on the "Item" menu on the Clipboard toolbar and click on the item that you want to copy (It holds many copied items).
