Error saving Excel 97 files to server

Users of our system are experiencing problems when saving Excel 97 files to a Novell server. A 'cannot save' error message is displayed and then the user is given a temporary file number and instructed to save the file under a different name. This has started to happen on a regular basis with a number of users and so far a solution has evaded me. Can you help?

Sorry if this is too obvious, but is it due to access right ? do the users have write, create, erase, and modify rights to the network directory they are trying to use ?

Previously I've experienced this when I was with a company using Novell. It was almost always a network problem. Usually a bad network connection or too much traffic.
