Hi,

If you try to enter time 9999:00 (9999 hours), Excel accepts it perfectly, but, try to increase one hour by entering manually, that is 10000:00 and it won't, recgonizes it a Text. However, it works doing a formula ="9999:00" + (1/24).

Won't work either If i try to fool it by entering
9999:60

Haven't tried this in 2000 or XP, only 97, but can you confirm, please ?

Your observations are correct! Here's what I
believe is happening... When you key a value
into a cell or attempt to coerce a value
(e.g., ="10000:0"+0) Excel interpets (using its
built-in formats) if the value is a date, time,
etc. Evidently, Excel doesn't want to believe
that a 5-digit number followed by a colon is a
time value.
