Increase worksheet columns, size

I'd like to add more columns to the right of the worksheet. It seems to stop at column "IV" and not let new columns added unless I delete data columns.

The maximum number of columns permissible is 256.
IV = 256.

Why not stack across a number of sheets in a worbook formulas can be easily linked.
