Is there a way to protect just a range of cells.
I can do the whole sheet but not the range of cells
I have excel 97

Do as you are doing but select only the cells you want not all, lock then can password all sorts, sounds like your CTRL+A (Select all) just what you want..

WARNING if you change it i think E97 will loose the original so i set ALL every time.. i cheat in A1 i add a commet ref all locked / protected cells jsut so i can add and BINGO

Yes! the easiest way is to work backwards (so to speak), unless of course you want to protect more cells than not.

first ctrl+a (select all)

goto format_cells protection and uncheck the locked box.

then you can highlight all the cells you want to protect and do the same but this time check the locked box.

now if you protect the sheet only the cells you locked will be protected.
