Sorting collum by date

How do we sort a collum containing dates i.e
28/3/2001
As when using the sort the function arranges the collum sorted from day only opposed to sorting to actual date.

It should sort by actual date. Check the cell format - perhaps the cells are formatted as Text
instead of Date.
