cant get this formula to work

I have this formula:

=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("I",I35)),"1",IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("II",I35)),"2",IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("III",I35)),"3")))

my results keep coming back with a 1

this is the text i am interrogating: (assume the top cell is I35)

MB7603(I)
MB7603(II)
VW7679(I)
VW7679(II)
MB6664(I)
MB6664(II)

Any idea what I am doing wrong?
