I have a spreadsheet with all of my clients' information and I have conditional formatting rules that make rows have red font and/or dotted backgrounds depending on conditions of their portfolios. {they are as follows: ='As of 09-30-13'!$I2>('As of 09-30-13'!$G2*1.2) and ='As of 09-30-13'!$G2>('As of 09-30-13'!$F2*1.25) }. I never sort my data which seems to be where other people found their formulas changing and I can't seem to find out when the new rules are created but after a while of using the worksheet when I go to manage rules I see way more rules then I created and the ones I did create have been manipulated. Any help would be appreciated!

Click the italics "fx" icon to the left of the formula bar to open the Functions Arguments dialog. Help is displayed for each argument.
Do you use a macro to unprotect, add rows (copying formatting & formulas) and re-protect? I have seen that scenario cause new rules to be created, while splitting the existing rule(s) into little chunks, rather than a contiguous range.
