convert letter to number in a column

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
michael coughlin,

It would help if we could see your actual raw data workbook/worksheet, and, what the results (manually formatted by you) should look like.

You can post your workbook/worksheets to the following free site (sensitive data changed), mark the workbook for sharing, and, provide us with a link to your workbook:

I want to convert the letter "W" to "5" and the letter "L" to "-5" in a column
Assuming those letters are the only thing in the cells, select the column and then use Excel's Replace dialog box (CTRL+H) to replace the letters with those numbers.

 Column F is empty on the worksheet at the link you posted in Message #4 . Your original post said "I want to convert the letter 'W' to '5' and the letter 'L' to '-5' in a column"... if there are no letters in Column F, then what is supposed to be converted?

column F will get the letters either L or W
That is different from what you asked originally. Is the criteria to put a W in Column F if Column G's (same row) value is positive and L if negative? If so, what should go in the cell if Column G's value is 0?
