Column A has dates for the past 5 years. Column B has numbers. I want to know how many numbers are between particular dates that I can specify.

Completely lost. Send help.

So in place of numbers, what if I have a list of names, like John Doe, Mary Smith, Jack Clark? When I use a list of names it returns a 0.

How about posting a small sample of your data and the result you want.
-Are you trying to count names between dates?
-Are the list of names unique or are there duplicates?
-Are your dates actual Excel dates or text?
-What ver. of Excel are you using?

Excel Office 365
Dates are Excel Dates
The names repeat as needed
The question is how many times does the name John Doe appear between 8/2/2017 and 8/4/2017...etc...

Column A Column B
8/1/2017 Joe Smith
8/2/2017 John Doe
8/3/2017 John Doe
8/4/2017 Joe Smith
8/5/2017 John Doe

8/4/2017 Joe Smith
8/5/2017 John Doe
