Does setting column width to 0 prevent the re-painting of column contents?

In my ongoing quest to optimize my laggy file, I've read that even if cells don't have overly complex formulas, repainting their contents (when calculations are running often, which is the case for me since I'm streaming in real-time stock data) is surprisingly resource-intensive. Simple Q: if I simply set the width of some helper-cells or less-important cells to zero, does Excel still "re-draw" them (in the background, I suppose?)

(I could move them out of view to columns to the right, but that will require a lot of formula re-wiring so if I can just achieve the same thing by setting column width to 0, then I'll do that...)
