Get number of columns?

Does anyone know how to get the second line of code to work like the first one?

This one works.
LASTROW = Range("a1000000").End(xlUp).Row

This one does not work.
LASTCOLUMN = Range("XFD1").End(xlLeft).Column

Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.

Another trick is to just turn on the Macro Recorder, go to any cell, and then hit CTRL+LEFT ARROW and then view the code it gives you.
