Having trouble building pivot, do I need to transform my data?

Hi all, I'm trying to build a pivot on data from a survey. The survey is very simple in that respondents were just asked to rate 5 different items on a scale from "not important" to "very important."

I want to build a pivot that has a column for each survey item and a row for each of the 5 standard responses. Here is a dummy table that shows what I am trying to accomplish:

I can't do this though, because when I try to include more than one item in either the "rows" or "columns" boxes, Excel tries to combine the data (e.g. showing 7 people who selected "important" for "full-length, wall-sized writing space" also selected "less important" for "flexible seating"). The reason I want to do this as a pivot is so that I can include slicers where a user can select specific courses and numbers of sections. Do I need to transform my data in order to do this?

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
