How do you add multiple cells quickly

Hi, I am trying to add multiple cells without having to use the (=A1+A2+A3+A4 etc) manual process, What is the quick way to do this?

or
select the ranges and look at the result in the Status Bar

What do I need to type to use SUM? I am trying to set up an automatically formulated figure that adjusts itself every time I change a number in the column

I see the number in the status bar but I would like it to run automatically, I hope this makes sense?

For example, if you want to add the range A1 to A10
=sum(A1:A10)

for multiple ranges, e.g. A1:B10, C1:C10, D1:D5
=sum(A1:B10,C1:C10,D1:D5)

An advise for you if you are not familiar with formula writing:
make use of the Insert Function dialog box for step by step formula writing... just click the fx icon next to the formula bar.

If you aren't sure what rows will be filled, you can also use whole column references
=SUM(A:A)

but that has to be in a cell that isn't in column A.

Alternatly, you could put the formula in the first row and sum the cells below, by putting this in A1
=SUM(A2:A65536)

keyboard shortcut for sum is ALT+=
option to put the = twice to finish it. so ALT+= =

such as cells with values A1:D10

can put formula in next rows & columns by first selecting A1:E11
then ALT+==

Or add just a column if you select A11
or add just a row if you select E1
