how can i get the first 3 digits out of strings in cases the string starts with zero/s?
in cases the string starts with zero/s, the function LEFT, ignores the zero/s...

Is the cell Formatted as TEXT or is it Custom Formatted with leading zeroes?

the cells are formatted as zipcodes (category=special, type=zipcode) in case it is formatted as general numbers, the first zero/s disappear

That is the same as being Custom Formatted as 00000. Give this formula a try...

=LEFT(TEXT(E4,"00000"),3)
