Pivot Table sums

I have 2 column with a simple formula: if A1 has "ITO" in it then B1 = 1, if A1 has "OTR" in it then C1 = 1. Thats fine, but when i add these Fields into a pivot table it sums up all the cells in B1 and C1, not just how many "1s" are in them but the sum also includes the blank cells. Basically when it is summing up it is counting formulas even if the cell remains blank.
