VBA - replace contents depending on a cell

I am hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm trying to tackle at work to make my job so much easier.

First of all, I am NOT a VBA programmer at all so I apologize for my complete "newbie-ness" with regards to creating this macro.

Here is my dilemma...

I have a spreadsheet with about 40,000+ lines of data. This data is arranged in columns such as this...
Last name, First name, EmployeeID, State, Line of Authority, etc.

When I generate this report, I then have to filter by a particular state (let's say, Illinois). Once I've filtered the data by this state, I then must sort by the Line of Authority column. This column can contain one of five different entries (Property, Casualty, Life, Accident, Health).

If any of the entries for IL are Life, Accident, or Health, I need to replace the contents of this cell with "ILLH" instead of what is already there (nothing is done to the cell if the contents are Property or Casualty).

I then repeat this process for about 20 other states. As you can see, this is extremely time-consuming.

I'm hoping to create a macro that would do all of this (for all 20 states and the different criteria for each state) automatically.

So if I had the following data...

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 224pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=299><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 50pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 2413" width=66><COL style="WIDTH: 32pt; I know if I can get started for just one example, I would be able to generate the code for all the other states.

Does anyone have anything that can help me solve this problem?

Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy post. :)

Does the content have to be changed after you run your filters? If not it would surely be simpler to just run a quick find and replace?

Thanks for your reply CB12. However, I don't really follow what you're saying.

The content of thousands of cells will have to be changed depending on specific criteria.

I can (and do) filter by each individual state and then replace the contents of the "Line of Authority" column depending on what is already in there. Whether I do this using "Find and Replace" or what I'm doing now (sort, then type-over the first cell and drag to cover all the rest) is still very time consuming.

Keep in mind that this spreadsheet contains all 50 states and that this criteria only affects around 20 states. Also, the contents that are being replaced vary with each state (i.e, ILLH (for Illinois), ALLH (for Alabama), etc.).

It would be the greatest thing in the world if I can just run a macro, which has all of these different criteria coded-out, to handle this task.

Thanks again.
