Hi,

I added conditional formatting, if A$1<>"" then color the whole A:A column, I applied this to the whole sheet but it colors all columns only based on cell value in A1, why is that? I tried all combinations with the $ sign but not working. I want Excel to color the column if the column is not blank in its first cell. Help on this simple matter?

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
Your formula is correct and it works :)
Perhaps
- you confused Excel when you selected the range
- or there are conflicting conditional formatting rules

This method works
- add a NEW worksheet
- select all cells by clicking on triangle in top left [ above (row) 1 and to left of (column) A ]
- click on ConditionalFormatting\ Manage Rules \New Rule \ Use formula... \ =A$1<>"" \format as you want \ OK \ Apply \ close the dialog box

Test by inserting values in B1 D1 etc
