I am using this formula =LEFT(AI5,(FIND("*",(",AI5)-1)) to take the text from left to the asterisk which works fine (Text * gives me Text)

Now I have text that looks like either of these:

Text * (text..etc)
Text (text..etc)

How do I modify my formula to first find the * but if no asterisk then find to the parenthesis, if it can be done?

Thank you,
James

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
So you want the text before the first asterisk - failing that then the first "(" right?

EDIT: Just use this formula :p If there is no asterisk or "(" in some strings this will output the string itself:

=TRIM(IFERROR(IFERROR(LEFT(AI5,FIND("*",AI5)-1),LEFT(AI5,FIND("(",AI5)-1)),AI5))
