How can I make a thermometer-type chart to display current progress toward a goal?

You could format a column on your worksheet to the width you want and then use conditional formatting to change the backgroud to red as the percentage increases. Simply base the formatting to th econdition to be greater than or equal to the value in a cell where you enter the percentage complete.
