Seeing Formula Results vs. Formula

I have a formula that simply links to another cell in another worksheet in the same workbook and repeats the text in the reference cell. Sometimes the formula gives the result of the referenced cell's text like I want and sometimes the cell shows only the formula itself. What's worse, if I check the formula result on the formula bar, it shows the text in the reference cell (so I know the formula itself is working) but I still can't get the text to show in the actual cell of the formula. Help!

this is specific to workbooks. check tools/options/view/and make sure formula is not checked.
also go into tools/options/calculations and make sure it is set to automatic update.

Thanks Qroozn. The settings in tools/options/view are set as you said, but still the problem persists. Any other ideas?

Found it! Both the referenced cell and the formula cell have to be formatted as "General" under format/cell/number.
