I am very new to Excel so this may sound like a stupid question, but what does the $ in front of cells mean in a formula?
Like $C9+$D6

In this particular case column C and D are *frozen*. When you drag it across, the formula will stay same. When you drag it down, it will change to: $C10+$D7, $C11+$D8, etc in the consecutive cells.

Think of $ as a funny looking boat anchor. The
reference =$C9 is "anchored" on column C:C
regardless of which column it is copied to.
