convert time to number

How can I convert a time such as 16:37:00(16 min 37 sec) to 17 or to 16.62?

After several hours trying last night and scouring this message board, I found the answer to the same question you had. I learned that Excel stores time in fraction of hours. If you want 16hours 37min (cell A) to show up as 16.62, use the formula =cellA*24. The same would work even if you are including seconds. Make sure to format cell B to "numbers" and leave 2 decimal places. Hope you don't spend as much time as I did figuring this simple thing out.
