Concatenate/Format

Column E is 3-digit area codes. Column F is 7 digit phone numbers formatted 555-5555. Want single column to appear as 555 555-5555. When I use formula in target cell: =CONCATENATE(E1," ",F1) the resulting number removes the hyphen, and I'm having a hard time getting it back. Tried using "Format, Cells, Special, Phone Number" and "Format, Cells, Custom, ###_###-####"

Can someone help either with not losing the formatting when I concatenate or with restoring it afterwards?
Thanks.

How about
=E1&" "&LEFT(F1,3)&"-"&RIGHT(F1,4)
