I cannot open Excel files from Explorer or from e-mail attachments, but they open fine within Excel. This has only happened in the last two weeks or so and is very very annoying as a lot of Excel files are received as e-mail attachments. HELP!!!!!

It's possible that files with the .xls extension aren't associated with Excel on your computer. In your Windows Explorer, go to View > Folder Options and select the Files Types tab. If you find the XLS extension on this list you can press Edit and associate that file type with Excel.

What happens when you try to open an Excel file from Explorer or Outlook?

Try reregistering Excel
Click Run on the Start menu.

Type in the path to Excel.exe adding this switch
/regserver eg.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe"/regserver

Then Click OK.

Regserver causes an application (Microsoft Excel) to register itself and then quit. Use this switch
when you want Microsoft Excel 97 to rewrite all
of its registry keys and reassociate itself with
Microsoft Excel files, such as workbooks,
charts,and add-ins.
