Refreshing pivot reports nightmare "Microsoft Excel cannot make this change because there are too ma

This is the error message. It's now appearing for Reports that I generated this morning and that were working fine a few minutes ago:

"Microsoft Excel cannot make this change because there are too many row or column items. Drag at least one row or column field off the Pivottable, or
to the page position. Alternativly, right-click a field, and then click Hide or Hide Levels on the shortcut menu."

My pivots do not have more columns than my spreadsheet. They have far far less.

what's going on? Everything has been fine up till now.

You have too many row or column ITEMS. Items
are show in yellow on graphic found in the Excel
Help topic for "Parts of a PivotTable". The
maximum number of items in a PivotTable is 8,000.
