Any clever ideas on how to mark an excel file to determine if people are using the most recent version?

We collect data from companies on Excel sheets. I want to detect within my VBA code if the spreadsheet they sent is the most recent version before I upload the data to our db.

I could hide an id somewhere on the sheet using a white font color or something like that. Wondering if anyone has other ideas. Thanks

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
