I like blue as much as anyone but not for geometric shapes like lines and boxes. How can I change the default color to, say, black?

Excel Facts

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
You find menu Format where click on Shapes to select it. You will see Shape Fill. You can change Shape Fill to Black.

Thanks, sadboy. I really meant the line color, not the fill. And the operative word is "default." I want all shapes to have black lines in any Excel sheet.

Change the line color to what you want it to be and then select the line and Set as Default from the shortcut menu.

You have to set it for lines and shapes separately.
