Changing Currency Symbol

I am having problems trying to convert my USD$ currency symbol over to BRL $R currency. I read through a few other threads but didn't see any solutions that could fix my problem. To address some of those earlier solutions:
- Everything is right aligned, so not an alignment issue
- Not being viewed as text, but I do have a formula in the cell with two numbers
- Font is Arial, so not a font issue
- Tried copy and pasting format from another excel file with the correct currency symbol, but whenever I tried to past it would convert the cell format from "Currency" to "General"
- No cell in the excel file I'm in allows me to change the currency from US Dollars.

Any suggestions? Could it be a plug-in issue? Running out of ideas, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Fastest way to copy a worksheet?
Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging tab for Sheet1 to the right. Excel will make a copy of the worksheet.
Hmm...select the cells and then select the dropdown where General/Currency and such are but choose "More Number Formats". Select Currency now, and try changing the currency symbol from there.

Thanks! I actually had someone help me fix the problem. Apparently if you have too many custom formatting options in excel, it won't be able to change the currency symbol as it is essentially viewed as adding another form of formatting to the existing list. Since I was already apparently at capacity, I simply deleted the custom formatting with dollar signs, then switched back to Brazillian Real and was able to get the currency symbol swapped. Not sure if this is what you were referring to, but either way thanks for the response!
