This may be a case of not knowing the best search terms to use, but I really have tried for way longer than I'd like to admit.

I'm trying to count the number of columns where:
-Row 1 = a specific number
-Row 2 = one of many codes in a list of arbitrary length elsewhere on the spreadsheet
-The codes are matched as whole whole cells (ie- "Ft" isn't a match for "F" and vice versa)

The codes alone are easy enough to count with SUMPRODUCT(COUNTIF(range, codeArray)), but I'm not sure how to successfully restrict the counting to columns where, for example, Row 1 = 2.

I feel I'm missing something obvious, but I'm a bit frustrated at this point. :( Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
So the pattern holds true... spend hours looking for something, finally ask about it, then find the obvious answer 5 minutes later.

Try COUNTIFS

For example 1 and F
=COUNTIFS(A1:I1,1,A2:I2,"F")

Hope this hepls
