Creating a new Variable when changing how Pivot Tables are grouped

My question:

Where or how do I turn on the setting that will automatically create a new variable in the field list when I change how a pivot table is grouped in excel 2013?

The problem:

If I have multiple pivot tables from the same data source and I change how something is grouped then all the pivot tables change with it. For example if I have one pivot table where the date is grouped by month and I create a new pivot table to and group the date by QTR then both pivot tables changes. I have tried making a 2nd table of the same data with a new table name and it does work as a temp fix but sometimes get destroyed when refreshing or adding new data.

My Co-worker is also using excel 2013 and by some magical option whenever he changes the grouping as my example above Excel automatically creates a new variable to used in the field list that can be dropped down in the pivot table. I have searched the settings and pivot table options to see what is different and came up with nothing. He has no clue what setting controls this.

Does anyone know how to set this up or what option that I am missing?

Thank you all for your help
