Hey everybody,

I'm new to excel and to this forum, so if I'm posting in the wrong place, please let me know.
I'm currently taking an intro to excel class in college and have this assignment that I'm stuck on. It has to do with adding a data table to the workbook. These are the exact instructions for this part of the workbook.

"Create a one-variable data table to calculate total calories if dinner calories are adjusted.
1) Click the Calorie Journal worksheet tab and select cell I5. The SUM formula calculates total calories consumed per day.

2)Select cell E15. The formula for the data table must be one column to the right and one row above the first input value.

3)Type =, click cell I5, and press Enter.

4)Select cells D15:E23 as the data table range.

5)Click the What-If Analysis button [Data tab, Data Tools group] and choose Data Table.

6)Click the Column input cell box and select cell G5. The input values will be substituted for this cell in the data table formula.

7) Click OK (Figure 8-99)."

The I5 cell is just a simple =SUM(C5:H5) adding up all of the calories for the different meals.

The table starts with these numbers in the left column, and should end with the right column like this

2,450 (The 2,450 is the result of =I5)
500 2,150
600 2,250
700 2,350
800 2,450
900 2,550
1,000 2,650
1,100 2,750
1,200 2,850

But when I do it, it comes out like this.

2,450
500 2,450
600 2,450
700 2,450
800 2,450
900 2,450
1,000 2,450
1,100 2,450
1,200 2,450

I have to create another table later on in the workbook, and I keep getting the same results. I feel like I'm following the instructions exactly, so I don't understand why it's like this.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
What does the formula in E16 look like? And do you perhaps have calculation set to Manual?
