Excel 2016 date entry

I'll try to state this clearly but that might be tough.
I used to be able to enter a date in a cell by month/day enter and get the result month/day/current year. I'd type: 12/5 enter result 12/5/2018
Then I updated to MS Office 2016 and entered the date 12/7 enter and result 7/12/2018.
I can select the date cells and format them to comply with my mm/dd/yyyy format but it doesn't change the manner in which I enter the date. I've looked everywhere that I know to try to fix my issue but I've failed to find a solution. Now I'm just frustrated and need help. Is there a location to setup the entry format for the date data?
