how can I subtract the end time from the start time. when I run what I thought would work below it gives me an error for using that (-) symbol

Rich (BB code):
=SUMIF(Table3[[Host]:[Participant11]],'Employee Table'!$A2,Table3[[EndTime]-[StartTime]])

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
I don't think you can do that operation in a Table reference. I suggest you create a new column in the Excel Table (your Table3) and call it NetTime. Then, you can put that into the sumrange argument of SUMIF.

In that case, your formula could be: =SUMIF([Host],$A$2,[NetTime])+SUMIF([Participant11],$A$2,[NetTime])
