How do I protect everything on a sheet but can use the drop down box

Hello,

I want to protect a sheet, showing lots of information that will change when selecting one of the parameters from the drop down box. If I use the format control and it is not 'locked' when protecting the whole sheet, when changing values in the box it says that the sheet is protected and it is not possible. I hope you can help (clear as mud I know!)

do you mean, data validation drop down? if yes I dont have any problem in changing the value in the cell which is not locked and the other dependent cells (locked) also work fine
